An apparatus and a method for inputting characters in a mobile terminal are provided to allow a user to input characters easily through simple manipulation and reduce the weight of the mobile terminal by including a jog dial. A key input unit(100) receives a character input command via a jog dial. A storage unit(102) stores a character string. A display unit(104) displays a character string inputted via the key input unit. When a character input command is inputted via the key input unit, a controller(106) controls to fetch the character string input data from the storage unit and display characters according to the input command. The jog dial performs left/right shifting operation and a selecting operation by pressing a shift operation key. The key input unit includes the jog dial for performing left/right movement and selective input operation, and a character format shift key. |
