The appliance (10) has a treating region (14) filled with fluid (16) i.e. water. The treating region is emptied by a drain pipe passage (20), which is attached at a bottom (18) of the treating region. The drain pipe passage is designed with a vertically displaceably pipe section (32). A return spring (40), a catch device (42), an electronic control device (ST), and a coil winding (48) displace the pipe section between a position above a filling level (hf) of the fluid in the treating region and another position below the former position preferably below the bottom of the treating region.
