The invention relates to a sorting system and a sorting method, said sorting system having sorting terminals that can be switched off. The sorting system having several sorting terminals (Ses.1, Ses.2, ...) sorts several objects according to a sorting characteristic. A sorting terminal (Ses.1, Ses.2, ...) is selected for each object. A main transport device (10, 10.4, 9.1, 9.2, ...) transports an object to the switch (1.1, 1.2,...) of the selected sorting terminal (Ses.1, Ses.2, ...). A connection transport device (9.1, 6.1, 9.2, 6.2,...) of the selected sorting terminal (Ses.1, Ses.2,...) transports the object further from the switch (1.1, 1.2,...) to a collection point (3.1, 3.2, ...). Each sorting terminal (Ses.1, Ses.2, ...) has a dedicated local drive (19.1, 19.2,...), which is operated in a start-stop mode. The local drive (19.1, 19.2, ...) of a sorting terminal (Ses.1, Ses.2,...) is activated at the latest when an object has reached the switch (1.1, 1.2,...) of said sorting terminal (Ses.1, Ses.2, ...) and the object is to be discharged into said sorting terminal (Ses.1, Ses.2, ...). The local drive (19.1, 19.2, ...) is deactivated as soon as or after the object has reached the collection point (3.1, 3.2,...) of said sorting terminal (Ses.1, Ses.2, ...).
