[Problem] To provide a novel antimicrobial agent that has excellent antimicrobial power and comprising an ester the structural components of which are propanediol and a beta-hydroxycarboxylic acid. [Solution] An antimicrobial agent comprising a propanediol mono-beta-hydroxycarboxylic acid ester represented by formula (1) or formula (2) [chemical formula 1] (where R1 and R2 are both C5-9 branched or unbranched saturated or unsaturated alkyl groups).
