The invention relates to the use of a distance target (1) and a near target (2) when calibrating a 3D camera (3) providing stereoscopic images, wherein the distance target (1) has a structured, e.g. textured surface which is visible to the 3D camera (3) and the near target (2), which is closer to the 3D camera (3) than the distance target (1), likewise has a structured surface visible to the 3D camera (3) and also a plate-like design, wherein the near target (2) automatically adjusts to the brightness conditions present at the distance target (1).
