PURPOSE: A pattern input device of a portable terminal and a method thereof are provided to extract an input pattern through the recognition of a movement pattern, to reduce the size of the input pattern according to a predetermined pattern reduction rate and then to display the input pattern on a display panel or to stores the input pattern in a memory. CONSTITUTION: A contact detection sensor(102) detects a contact between a contact tip of a portable terminal and the surface of an object. A motion recognition sensor(104) recognizes a movement pattern of the contact tip. A pattern extraction block(106) extracts an input pattern from the recognized movement pattern. If the total size of the extracted input pattern is bigger than the size of a display panel, a pattern ratio determination block(108) determines a corresponding pattern reduction rate. A pattern size adjustment block(110) reduces the size of the input pattern according to the determined pattern reduction rate.
