摘要 <p>Provided is a liquid crystal display device that achieves high use efficiency of light, is capable of displaying a bright image, and does not cause dulling of images. The liquid crystal display device of the present invention comprises a liquid crystal display panel provided with liquid crystal cells between a first polarizing plate and a second polarizing plate, and a surface light source device that illuminates the liquid crystal display panel. The surface light source device comprises: a light source unit; and a light guide plate that emits polarized light having directionality of a maximum intensity in a first direction that forms a predetermined angle from the direction of the normal of a light-emitting surface on a plane that is approximately parallel to the light guide direction of light from the light source unit. The second polarizing plate comprises: a polarizing unit that includes an absorptive polarizer; and a prism unit that is provided to the light guide plate side of the polarizing unit and has arranged therein a plurality of columnar unit prisms that are convex on the light guide plate side. With regards to the polarized light that is emitted from the light guide plate, when La is the integral intensity of emitted light for the ranges in which the polar angle is 50°-80° and the azimuth is 135°-225°, 0°-45°, and 315°-360° and Lt is the integral intensity for all emitted light, the ratio La/Lt is 0.3 or higher.</p>
