PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal bond nonwoven fabric filter medium which neither contains nor generates a chlorine-based, phosphorus-based or bromine-based flame-retardant, a harmful substance such as formaldehyde, and can be washed and regenerated, as well as an air filter using this nonwoven fabric filter medium. SOLUTION: This thermal bond nonwoven fabric filter medium is composed mainly of a thermal fusion bonding PET fiber, with the addition of a core and sheath composite short fiber, i.e. the core part made of polyester and the sheath part made of a thermoplastic elastomer, accounting for not less than 10 mass% and a highly stretchable fiber accounting for not less than 20 mass%. Besides, this filter medium has a fiber surface area of 800 to 2,100 m<SP>2</SP>/m<SP>3</SP>, an average fiber diameter of 4.2 to 37.8 dt and a fiber packing of 0.8 to 1.5%.
