The method involves estimating an instantaneous distance separating two vehicles (400, 401). A determination is made to check whether the estimated instantaneous distance is higher than a threshold value (S1) for activation of a motorway type lighting function, where the function produces motorway type light beam (403). The function is activated if the estimated instantaneous distance is higher than the threshold value. Another distance separating one of the vehicles and a third vehicle is estimated. The function is deactivated if the latter distance is lower than another threshold value (S3).
