A rope cleat clutch having two moveable gripping pieces 30, 40 pivotally attached to an activating lever handle 60 which is hinged onto a base plate 70 that has a third gripping surface 160. In operation a rope (not shown) is threaded through an entry fairlead 100, then through a midpoint fairlead 110 to an exit fairlead 120. The rope is tensioned by pulling on a load then the whole lever assembly 20 is manually depressed by the lever handle 60 to force the inner surface of the two moveable gripping pieces 30 and 40 to bear onto each side of the rope whilst simultaneously pressing the external smooth outer surface of the gripping pieces into a tapered section 130 of the base plate 70 and the rope against the third gripping surface 160. As the force from the load transfers to the cleat, the gripping pieces 30 and 40 bite into the rope, which due to the particular geometry of the lever assembly 20, creates a turning moment around the hinge pivot 80 forcing the lever assembly 20 to rotate slightly with the resultant torque force further pressing upon and then retaining the external surfaces of the gripping pieces 30 and 40 within the taper section 130 of the base plate 70, in turn securely holding the rope without slippage. |
