A system 1 for providing contracts-type trading between parties based on a sports index comprises: a sports index system 21 for updating in real time the index which corresponds to the expected or predicted positions of sports teams within a real-world sports league, an exchange system 31 providing a plurality of contracts, each defining a particular sports team and a future expiry date for the contract. The exchange system 31 further comprises means enabling users to buy and sell contracts and means for generating an up-to-date indication of a user's financial position based at least in part on the change in index position for the team defined in the user's contract or contracts. The system provides part of an infrastructure by means of which users, be they recreational or professional traders, are able to conveniently make trades, e.g. over the internet, based on the position of a team or sports person within a real-world sports league or combination.
