[Also in Groups II, V, XXVI and XXIX] A mixing machine comprises a mixing screw 10 rotatably driven by an electric motor 13, and a barrel 12 which is arranged to be displaced upwardly so that the screw rotates thereon and is adapted to be vertically adjusted during a mixing operation so that the load on the driving motor remains constant (see also Group II). A power meter 80 in the motor circuit includes a contact 84 which closes with a contact 86 or 87 as the load reaches predetermined minimum and maximum values respectively. The closing of the contacts 84 and 86 or 87 cause changes of air pressure in an air line 88, which operate a hydraulic control valve 78 (see Group XXIX) through which hydraulic fluid is supplied to hydraulic cylinders 61, 62 to displace pistons 63 64 and thus make the required vertical adjustment of the barrel 12.
