An industrial roll includes a cylindrical core having an outer surface; a polymeric cover overlying the core outer surface; and a sensing system. The sensing system includes a plurality of sensors at least partially embedded in the cover and for sensing an operating parameter of the roll and providing signals related thereto and a processor that processes sensor signals. Each sensor includes two electrodes, wherein a first electrode overlies the substrate top surface and a second electrode underlies only a portion of the substrate bottom surface, thereby forming a gap adjacent the substrate bottom surface and a substrate side surface; a first conductive sheet attached to the first electrode and the side surface of the substrate and extended away from the substrate bottom surface of the substrate; and a second conductive sheet attached to the second electrode and extended in the opposite direction away from the substrate bottom surface.
