Class 130 A method of increasing the density of a,. tobacco filler at desired positions therealong, e.g. in the production of dense-end cigarettes, consists in engaging the filler at a part near each said position and displacing tobacco lengthwise of the filler, and also engaging the filler adjacent each said part and displacing a smaller quantity of tobacco than that displaced by the first displacement in the same direction as the first displacement. The filler, formed in a passage P in a continuous rod machine as described in Specification 646,746, passes to the tongue 2 of the wrapping mechanism, above which rotates a wheel 3 carrying groups of fingers 4A-4D projecting through a slot and moving in the same direction as, but faster than, the filler, each group of fingers being arranged to enter the filler in the region of a point at which it is desired to increase the density e.g. at the points at which the wrapped filler is subsequently cut. The fingers 4A-4D of each group are of progressively decreasing lengthso that each in turn penetrates less deeply into the filler. The leading finger 4A, due to its faster motion, displaces tobacco forward to cause a local increase in density, the succeeding fingers in each group displacing successively smaller amounts of tobacco forward to partly replace the tobacco displaced by the preceding finger, whereby a gap in the filler is avoided. The Provisional Specification describes a modification in which the fingers are arranged to move slower than the filler. Specification 689,590 also is referred to. |
