PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus for detecting a subject within a photographing screen and performing focus control on the basis of the detection result.SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes an image pickup device, a feature area detection unit, an estimation unit, and a focus control unit. The image pickup device photoelectrically converts a light flux from a photographic optical system to generate an image. The feature area detection unit analyzes the image to detect a feature area within a photographic screen. The estimation unit detects variations of the size and position of the feature area within the photographic screen on the basis of the plurality of images generated in time series, and estimates the movement direction of the feature area. The focus control unit selects focus control means of the photographic optical system according to the estimation result of the estimation unit, and performs a focus operation of the photographic optical system. |
