PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display unit and a television receiver capable of further increasing the sense of brightness and enhancing the video grade by detecting a light emission part of a video signal, enhancing the brightness of the light emission part to conspicuously display it, and controlling the brightness stretch according to the resulting ambient brightness.SOLUTION: A light emission detector 12 detects a light emission part, regarded as a light emitting video, on the basis of a prescribed feature quantity of an input video signal. An area-active control/brightness stretch part 14 stretches the brightness of a backlight part 16 to increase the brightness, and decreases the brightness of the video signal on a non-light emission part excluding the light emission part, on the basis of the index on the brightness calculated according to a prescribed condition from the input video signal. Then, the area-active control/brightness stretch part 14 switches over a controlling curve that defines the relationship between the brightness index and the stretch quantity depending on the device ambient brightness detected by a brightness detector 19. |
