PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve drainage from the inside of a catalyst layer in a membrane electrode assembly.SOLUTION: The membrane electrode assembly to be used for a solid polymer fuel cell comprises: an electrolyte membrane 12; and a catalyst layer 14 formed on a surface of the electrolyte membrane 12. The catalyst layer 14 has a plurality of cracks 14crk which penetrate the catalyst layer 14 in the thickness direction, the cracks 14crk having opening width W that is continuously widened from the electrolyte membrane 12 side to the surface side of the catalyst layer 14.
