PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool superior in chipping resistance and wear resistance by controlling a residual stress in a minute portion near a cutting edge.SOLUTION: In a surface-coated cutting tool, a hard coat layer formed of (Al, Cr) N is vapor-deposited on the surface of a tool base formed of a WC-base cemented carbide. When a residual stress is measured, by a 2D method, for the (Al, Cr) N layer of a flank face within the range of radius 50 μm having a center which is 50 μm apart from the intersecting ridge of the rake face and flank face, a compressive residual stress &sgr;11 in the direction parallel to the intersecting ridge satisfies 0.5 GPa≤&sgr;11≤4.5 GPa, and a compressive residual stress &sgr;22 in the direction perpendicular to the direction of the &sgr;11 satisfies 0 GPa≤&sgr;22≤4.0 GPa. The &sgr;11 and &sgr;22 satisfy the relation of &sgr;11-&sgr;22≥0.5 GPa. |
