The method involves injecting a quantity of sulfur and exhaust gas into a heat engine (2) in upstream of a nitrogen oxide trap (5) that is mounted in downstream of a turbo compressor (4) by an injector (9), where the sulfur is injected with a rate determined according to flow of exhaust gas, and the quantity of sulfur is determined according to mass of sulfur to be stored in the trap. Nitrogen oxide purges of the nitrogen oxide trap are realized before and after injection of the sulfur and the exhaust gas. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for characterizing a nitrogen oxide trap mounted in downstream of a heat engine (2) a test bench for a heat engine.
