The present disclosure relates to expandable electrodes and components thereof that are expandable and/or flexible during, prior to and/or after the manufacture of the electrodes. The electrodes comprise a non-conducting substrate in which a plurality of grooves or other patterns are made, by a process such as nano-imprinting, and then depositing a conductive layer on the substrate and the inner walls of at least one of the plurality of grooves to form the electrode.
