AXIAL FLOW PUMP WITH MULTI-GROOVED ROTOR In a first aspect there is disclosed an axial flow blood pump (10). The blood pump comprises a housing (12) and a rotor (14) for moving blood through the housing. The rotor has a plurality of discrete inlets each opening into one of a plurality of discrete substantially parallel grooves (22) each extending to an outlet wider than its inlet. Each groove defines a raised land area (35) between it and an adjacent groove and having an intermediate non-axially curved section narrower than its inlet and its outlet to drive blood to discharge axially from the outlet of said groove as the rotor is rotated. A motor is also provided which includes magnetic poles carried by each land area and a stator (36) including an electrically activated coil (38) to magnetically interact with said magnetic poles to cause said rotor to rotate.
