PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods and apparatus for fast geometric mode decision in a video encoder.SOLUTION: An apparatus includes an encoder 100 for performing a non-exhaustive geometric mode decision using geometric model-based partitioning modes. The encoder 100 skips a test of the geometric model-based partitioning modes on the basis of at least one of correlation and dependence between the geometric model-based partitioning modes and non-geometric partitioning modes.
