PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for decomposing water, which enable producing oxygen and hydrogen in good yield at low cost by a simple operation and apparatus using a photocatalyst.SOLUTION: The method for producing hydrogen and oxygen by decomposing water with a photocatalyst comprises the steps of preparing water containing a photocatalyst and Coion, and irradiating the photocatalyst with light to decompose the water into hydrogen and oxygen. TaON, and WO3 are favorable as photocatalysts. A nitrate salt, a chloride salt, and a hydrate thereof are favorable as Coions.
