The present invention relates to microorganisms that produce ethane-1, 2-diol from D-xylose, and to a method using the microorganisms for producing ethane-1, 2-diol; and, more particularly, to a transgenic Escherichia coli manufactured by knocking out the D-xylose isomerase gene and/or aldehyde dehydrogenase gene from the genome DNA in Escherichia coli and transforming same to an expression vector including the D-xylose dehydrogenase gene, and to a method capable of efficiently producing ethane-1, 2-diol from D-xylose by using the transgenic Escherichia coli.
