This control device for an internal combustion engine switches a steady-state characteristic, which defines the relationship between the engine load ratio and the throttle opening, between a high atmospheric pressure steady-state characteristic and a low atmospheric pressure steady-state characteristic in accordance with whether the atmospheric pressure is higher or lower than a prescribed value. For the low atmospheric pressure steady-state characteristic, in the middle load ratio region the throttle opening corresponding to the same engine load ratio is set smaller than for the high atmospheric pressure steady-stage characteristic, and the throttle opening is set so as to increase as the engine load ratio increases toward a full load in the region of a higher load ratio than the middle load ratio region. When a request to increase the intake air amount with high responsiveness under low atmospheric pressure has not been issued, this control device references the low atmospheric pressure steady-state characteristic and calculates the target throttle opening corresponding to the target engine load ratio, and when a request to increase the intake air amount with high responsiveness under low atmospheric pressure has been issued, the value for the target throttle opening is set larger than the target throttle opening calculated in the aforementioned manner. |
