This machining system comprises: a holding device that holds a workpiece being a plank material, in a horizontal posture; a machining unit that machines a machining site on the workpiece held by the holding device; and a moving device capable of moving the machining unit to the machining site on the workpiece held by the holding device. The holding device includes: a plurality of holding units; and moving mechanisms provided at each holding unit, that move the holding units between a holding position where the workpiece is held and a retracted position separated from the holding position. The machining system also comprises: a detection device that scans the workpiece held by the holding device, and detects the shape and position of the machining site on the workpiece; and a control device that controls the moving device and the moving mechanisms on the basis of the detection results from the detection device.
