摘要 <p>Boron carbide can be modified by continuously feeding boron carbide powder via a carrier gas into a plasma at a temperature in excess of 1300 0C in an inert atmosphere such as a vacuum. Modification can be making the powder more spherical, reducing the size of the powder, atomic rearrangement or atomic modification. Boron carbide modified by this method can have a spherical shape with a maximum diameter of 10 microns, have an atomic carbon ratio of ≤ 20 % and/or be substantially free of the B12(CCC) polytype. Apparatus for performing this modification comprises a housing 20 in which is located a first electrode 21, a second electrode 25 around an opening 23 in the housing 20, a carrier gas feed line upstream of the first electrode 21 and means for feeding solid material into the carrier gas upstream of the first electrode.</p>
