High solids low-viscosity aqueous radiation curable urethane binder dispersions

A water-free and cosolvent-free binder composition, comprises a mixture of at least one emulsifier-free, hydrophobic binder containing groups which can be polymerized by high-energy radiation; and at least one hydrophilic unsaturated polyester resin containing the reaction product of at least one unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and/or an anhydride, at least one polyalkylene oxide compound, and at least one hydroxy-functional compound. A water-free and cosolvent-free binder composition, comprises a mixture of: (A) at least one emulsifier-free, hydrophobic binder containing groups which can be polymerized by high-energy radiation; and (B) at least one hydrophilic unsaturated polyester resin containing the reaction product of at least one unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and/or an anhydride; at least one polyalkylene oxide compound having a number average molecular weight of 106-2000, >=2 hydroxyl end groups and >=2 oxyalkylene units, where >=50% of the oxyalkylene units are oxyethylene units; and at least one hydroxy-functional compound containing at least one polymerizable unsaturated group per molecule comprising vinyl, allyl, methacrylic or acrylic groups. Independent claims are also included for: (A) an aqueous dispersion containing the binder composition; (B) a process for preparing an aqueous dispersion which comprises diluting the binder composition with water until the desired viscosity is obtained; or adding 30 parts of tap water to 70 pbw of the binder composition with slow stirring and then emulsifying the mixture; (C) a process for preparing a coating which comprises applying the aqueous dispersion to a substrate, removing the water and then curing the coating; and (D) a coating, adhesive or sealant composition containing the binder composition.
