PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent printing paper from becoming soiled with attached toner, by reducing the amount of attachment of toner used for a displacement correction pattern. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes TM sensors 17, 18, and 19, each of which irradiates a pattern formed on a conveying belt 5 with a light beam and detects specular-reflected light and diffusion reflected light from the pattern; and a CPU that detects the amount of image displacement on the conveying belt 5, on the basis of the detection result of the displacement correction pattern, and calculates an amount of attachment of toner for the pattern on the basis of the detection result of each of correction patterns 30 for the amounts of attachment, obtained by the TM sensors 17, 18, and 19. The CPU calculates a detection signal for the displacement correction pattern 30 from the detection result of the correction pattern for the amount of attachment; and the smallest amount of attachment per unit area, which can be detected in a detection threshold position 41 BK_3, 4 intersected by a threshold line 40, and by using the smallest amount of attachment per unit area, the CPU forms the displacement corrected image.
