Device for protecting the outside mirror of a motor vehicle from collision with obstacles on the side

The method involves detecting a position of an obstacle (10) in an environment of a vehicle (1) by a sensor system (3) when the obstacle is located at outside of a range of the sensor system. A movement (4) of the vehicle is determined by evaluating a steering angle, a velocity, acceleration and/or a position of the vehicle. A driving path (5) for an object i.e. outside mirror (2), arranged at outside of the vehicle is computed. A possible collision of the object with the obstacle is determined by adjusting the driving path with the position of the obstacle. The sensor system consists of ultrasonic, laser, radar and/or camera sensors. An independent claim is also included for a device for protecting an outside object of a vehicle.
