The device comprises a processing head (2) movable through a cylindrical workpiece or an outside of the workpiece, a unit for supplying laser light to the processing head or a unit for generation of laser light in the processing head, and an optical unit, which impinges the inner side or the outer side of the workpiece with the laser light. The optical unit is configured to produce an annular intensity distribution of laser light on the inside or outside of the workpiece. The process head is moved in axial direction through the workpiece or outside of the workpiece, and comprises a nozzle.
