<p>A system for controlling speed in a vehicle driveline which includes a drive clutch 11 which transmits power to an associated synchromesh gearbox 13. The system operates during ratio changes in the gearbox 13 and comprises control means which receives signals indicative of the gear box ratio change which the driver wishes to make, the state of engagement of the drive clutch 11 and of the speed of rotation of part of the driveline on the output side of the clutch. The system also includes a speed adjuster means 41, e.g. an electric motor generator or an eddy current brake, operative on the driveline on the output side of the clutch. The control means engages the speed adjuster means 41 when the clutch is disengaged during a ratio change to adjust the speed of rotation of the driveline on the output side of the clutch to a speed more appropriate to the gear ratio expected to be selected by the vehicle driver prior to engagement of the new ratio.</p> |
