The device has a sample container made of radiation-transparent material, in which alkali atoms are provided. A beam source is provided for irradiation of the sample container with a measuring beam (S,S') that is partially absorbed by the alkali atoms. A detector is provided for measuring the intensity of the measuring beam that is transmitted through the sample container. A back-reflection optics (10) is provided for attenuated back reflection of a small proportion of the measuring beam transmitted through the sample container. An independent claim is included for a method for magnetic field measurement.
