The mop holder has a stem retainer, a joint, and a wiper plate (5), where the joint acts between the stem retainer and the wiper plate. A retention device retains a mop cloth in a region of a front longitudinal side (7) of the wiper plate. The wiper plate includes an upward open elongated recess (8) in the region of the front longitudinal side of the wiper plate, and a movable closing strap that releasably covers the elongated recess.
