<p>A pump 10 comprises a partial emission impeller 20 disposed within an impeller chamber 17, and a drive mechanism 27 disposed in a rotor chamber 25 for driving the impeller. The rotor chamber has a fluid inlet 42 configured to receive fluid discharged from the impeller chamber. The pump further comprises a return conduit 21 configured to restrict fluid flow from the rotor chamber to the impeller chamber. The return conduit enables precise control of the flow rate from the rotor chamber into the impeller chamber, thereby allowing sufficient fluid to circulate in the rotor chamber for cooling and lubrication of the drive mechanism. The dimensions of the return conduit may be determined empirically or via numerical modelling and computer simulation. Preferably the drive mechanism comprises a magnetic drive element driven by a second magnetic drive element located outside the rotor chamber, or an electromagnetic drive element driven by an electromagnetic stator located outside the rotor chamber.</p> |
