Method for populating a security policy database

A method and apparatus for populating an IPsec Security Policy database. A network node receives a Security Policy to be inserted into the Security Policy database and calculates a priority value to assign to the policy. A policy group stored in the database having the same priority value as the calculated value is located, and the Security Policy is stored in that policy group in the Security Policy database. This allows subsequent queries of the Security Policy database to be performed much more quickly.
