PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for providing additional information of contents are provided to respect the watch of a contents program by minimizing an additional information providing screen of an appearance element appearing with contents. CONSTITUTION: A receiving terminal judges whether additional information of contents exists or not based on an indicator who is extracted from received metadata and overlays an appearance element of the contents (S300,S310). The receiving terminal outputs connection information for the download of simple additional information related to the appearance element and detailed additional information and downloads the detailed additional information from a server (S320,S330). The receiving terminal notifies the presence of the downloaded detailed additional information after the end of the contents and outputs the detailed additional information on a screen (S340,S350).
