PURPOSE: An ion generator capable of removing harmful materials in a duct and a control method thereof are provided to sterilize and purify the inner space of an air conditioner duct installed in a vehicle or a building. CONSTITUTION: An ion generator capable of removing harmful materials in a duct comprises an ion generator(100), a rotary unit, a driving part, a sensor part(400), and a control part(500). The ion generator is installed in a duct. The rotary unit is comprised in the duct and rotates ion generator. The driving part supplies torque to the rotary unit. The sensor part detects the air pollution in the duct. The control part controls the generating quantity of ion and the rotational speed of the ion generator based on the level of the inner air pollution of the duct.
