FIELD: physics.SUBSTANCE: input light beam (L1) is transmitted to a carrier (11) where there is frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) on the binding surface (12). The amount of light in the resultant output light beam (L2) is detected by an optical detector (31) and gives information on the presence of target particles on the binding surface.
