In a wireless communications network, a user equipment is capable of operating in a first mode in which uplink signals are transmitted using a single antenna and in at least a second mode in which uplink signals are transmitted using two or more antennas. According to a first aspect of the invention, it is determined at the user equipment whether to request activation of the first or second mode, and dependent on the determination, a first message is sent to a first network node requesting activation of the first mode or the second mode, the first message being sent together with Medium Access Control (MAC) Scheduling Information (SI). The first or second mode is activated in dependence on receipt of a second message at the user equipment from the network node indicating whether the first mode or the second mode should be activated. According to a second aspect of the invention, the user equipment sends an indication of transmission power of the user equipment to a network node, and sends, to the network node, an indication of a threshold for use in determining whether to activate the first or second mode, said indication being sent together with user equipment capability information. The user equipment receives an instruction to activate the first or second mode, the instruction being dependent on a determination at the network node of whether to activate the first or second mode based on a comparison of the indication of transmission power of the user equipment with the threshold. The first or second mode is activated in dependence on receipt of said instruction. |
