A method for controlling the gain of an optical amplifier comprises: before a wavelength signal is multiplexed, loading a wavelength label onto the wavelength signal; obtaining the amplitude of each wavelength label in input light and output light of an optical amplifier, and obtaining the amplitude of each wavelength signal according to the amplitude of each wavelength label in the input light and the output light, so as to obtain the gain of each wavelength signal; obtain the overall gain of the optical amplifier according to the gains of the wavelength signals; comparing the overall gain with a preset target gain, and controlling the working gain of the optical amplifier according to a comparison result. Also disclosed is a device for controlling the gain of an optical amplifier. The solution eliminates the influence from amplification of self-incurred radiated noise, can perform fine control on the gain of the optical amplifier, so as to ensure the performance optimization of a wavelength division multiplexing system.
