Treating water, which is conducted in a water pipe (9), comprises (a) determining a volume of water through the water pipe, (b) injecting a disinfecting agent into the water pipe in at least one injection site (7), and (c) automatically adjusting an injection rate, at which the disinfecting agent is injected into the water pipe, depending on the volume of water determined in the step (a). An independent claim is also included for a device for treating the water, which is conducted in the water pipe, comprising a water volume determining device (8) for determining the volume of the water through the water pipe, an injection device (2) for injecting the disinfecting agent into the water pipe in at least one injection site, and a control unit (3) for controlling the injection device such that the injection rate, at which the disinfecting agent is injected into the water pipe, is adjusted depending on the volume of the water determined by the water volume determining device.
