PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brake and a clutch greatly improved in economic efficiency and adjustability in order to solve problems wherein though mission of a brake and a clutch is borne by a device including a magnetic fluid base and a device of a spring base, and a commercially available device is effective for some uses, while being expensive or lacking adjustability, or having the both properties.SOLUTION: An electric braking or a clutching device includes a housing 12; an armature 48 having a shaft 16 and disposed at the housing, the armature and the housing defining a radial air gap therebetween; and a coil 56 configured to generate, when energized, a magnetic field at the housing and the armature, a flux path of the field extending from the coil into the armature, from the armature into the housing, and from the housing back to the coil, with the direction of the flux path from the armature into the housing being substantially radial in orientation. |
