PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably operate a gasification furnace by preventing blockage of a slag hole due to char or slag.SOLUTION: A heat exchanger 20 is arranged on the upper part of a coal gasification section 10. The diameters D1 and D3 of a slag hole 16 and a throat section 17 respectively are set three times or more with respect to the pitch ST of rows of heat exchanging tubes 21. Thus, the slag hole 16 and the throat section 17 are prevented from being blocked by char or sintered objects 50 falling from the heat exchanger 20 and a coal gasification furnace 101 can be operated stably.
