The appliance (10) has a controller (22), a sensor (24) e.g. charge-coupled device camera, that is utilized for monitoring a cooking region (12). A projection device (26) is utilized for projecting an image of a section of the cooking appliance. A timer (23) is coupled with the controller such that the timer is started if a user interaction is recognized by the sensor. The cooking region is arranged with a set of shelf levels (16). The projection device is assigned with two portions, where one portion is arranged with a product to be cooked, and another portion forms a control surface. An independent claim is also included for a method for cooking a product.
