PURPOSE: A digital receiver and a method for processing caption data in the digital receiver are provided to offer 3D caption data to the digital receiver as having compatibility with the conventional legacy device. CONSTITUTION: A video decoder decodes caption data, by detecting the caption data from a received 3D video elementary stream (ES) (S404). A graphic engine or/and on screen display (OSD) processor determines x-y coordinate for a caption window, and applies a disparity value to the caption window according to the extracted Aw_flag value (S406,S410). The graphic engine or/and OSD processor determines x-y coordinate of a corresponding caption window which is to be overlaid to right video image data (S412). The digital receiver mixes left caption and left video picture through a mixer, and mixes right caption and right video picture through the mixer (S418).
