In a particular embodiment, a device is disclosed that includes means for providing a reliable and inexpensive neutron detector comprising a charge-coupled device employing a plasma effect for energy measurement and particle identification giving reconstructed charge clusters for alpha particles that are easily distinguishable from photons, electrons, and muons. The device also includes means for operating the reliable and inexpensive neutron detector comprising the charge-coupled device for high- precision neutron imaging.
