The present invention relates to a method for producing a multicoat color and/or effect painting system by (1) applying a pigmented aqueous basecoat material to a substrate, (2) forming a polymer film from the coating applied in stage (1), (3) applying a clearcoat material to the resultant basecoat film, and then (4) curing the basecoat film together with the clearcoat film. The method of the invention comprises using in stage (1) a pigmented aqueous basecoat material which comprises at least one alkyl-substituted cycloaliphatic ketone in an amount of 0.1% to 5% by weight, based on the weight of the basecoat material.
