In order to provide a user with a function, as a service, which is interesting to them and can capture their interest, the message exchange system according to the present invention is provided with: a display control unit which chronologically displays, on a display unit, a message display based on character information included in a message and/or an avatar which represents the user that has transmitted the message; an action selection unit which selects an action given to the avatar; and a transmission unit which transmits a message including character information inputted in an input field and/or an action ID which uniquely identifies the action selected by the action selection unit. The display control unit makes the avatar, representing the user who has transmitted the message, act in accordance with the action ID included in the message.
