PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reactive power controller which can increase the available reactive power Q regardless of the value of effective power P, and to provide a method of operating a generator by using the reactive power controller.SOLUTION: The reactive power controller includes a control unit 53 for controlling the reactive power Q being output from a generator 1 within an operating area A, while setting the value of the reactive power Q being output from the generator 1 to a predetermined set value which is set depending on the operation state of the generator 1. The control unit 53 calculates the value of the reactive power Q corresponding to the detection value po of effective power P, detected by effective power detection means 51 for detecting the effective power P being output from the generator 1, based on an approximate expression for approximating to the boundary on the phase lead side in the operating area A, and sets this value of the reactive power Q as the predetermined set value in automatic voltage regulation means 7. |
